Just a Ghost Upon the Hill

I have to assume all indie writers feel this way eventually. I’ve poured my life into writing—16 years just on novels—and for what? You write and write, and the silence on the other end is deafening. It makes you wonder if it was all just a dream, or if you’re just shouting into the void. At this point, I don’t even know what to feel.”

Just a Ghost Upon the Hill

The cursor blinks against the white,
A lonely pulse in fading light.
The file is open, saved, and clean,
The final chapter, final scene.
No agent waiting, no advance,
Just me, and this one fading chance.

I hit the “publish” button, bold,
A story waiting to be told.
I watched the dashboard, day by day,
And saw the numbers waste away.
A rank that sticks in seven figures,
The hopeful ache that slowly withers.

I tweaked the keywords, bought the ads,
One of a million hopeful fads.
I begged for reviews, a star or two,
From strangers who just skimmed it through.
I wrote the posts, I forced the smile,
And felt the burnout all the while.

The day job calls, the bills are due,
The time I stole to see this through
Feels wasted now, a foolish debt,
A heavy, deep, and cold regret.
The passion I mistook for skill

Is just a ghost upon the hill.
I close the file, I shut the screen.
The world I built remains unseen.
The ink is dry, the well is spent,
I don’t know where the magic went.
I’ll let the silence have the win,
And not pick up the pen again.

The Realm of Darkness

This is a new series I am working on. What if there was as virus that turned people into zombie type things, but what if they remembered who they were before they became sick. Take this journey with me, look into the lives of the surviors in this first section of the Realm of Darkness.

I don’t know how we got here. It feels like it happened overnight, but I know that’s not true. Time is irrelevant now. To think that I used to worry about going to school with wet hair and if my clothes were the right style. Now, all I care about is staying alive and helping others stay alive. I am a survivor.

I’ve seen things that no one should ever have to see. I’ve lost people I loved. I’ve been through more pain than I ever thought possible. But I’m still here. I’m still fighting. And I’m not going to give up. None of us are. We are the resistance. We are one of the only holdouts of the human world. I know there are more of us out there, but communications were cut down when the virus took over.

We are scattered and alone, but we are not defeated. We will find each other. We will rebuild. We will reclaim our world. We are the survivors. We are the resistance. My name is Griselda, but people call me Selda. I am a survivor.

The Shadow Realm Chronicles: Maeve

Check out the first book in my series the Shadow Realm Chronicles. The series is almost done. Two more books to come which are both being edited now! Stay tuned for more! All books are available on Kindle for 3.99 and they are part of Kindle Unlimited! The link is at the bottom of this post.

Many years ago, darkness tore apart the worlds. They called it the Great War, for it was massive and involved all the realms of each world. Enemies on either side grew their armies for battle with heavy casualties. New allies formed out of this bloodshed while old ones crumbled.

The world of the Faye changed forever as their king descended into madness. His name was Julian. He once was a loving ruler, but those times were long gone. The pages written of him now are full of rage, blood, and hatred. Hatred for his children who grew to love others and revolt against him and his rule. Hatred for his wife, who fled with his children and hatred for all the realms that were not under his rule. Julian needed his children because they were powerful. Each one controlled one of the four elements: wind, water, earth, and fire. Even though his children hated what he had become, they remembered the good in him and were perhaps the only ones besides their mother who did.

Marius, the leader of the vampires and Jonathan, the ruler of The Shadow Realm, fought alongside Julian, but they did not trust him. Each of these three men was scheming against each other as they all wanted to come out the victor.

Jonathan had many plans and plots forming in his head, but they all revolved around Maeve. Maeve was a fairy, but she lived in a quiet world. The one world that was protected from the Great War. Jonathan didn’t care what Julian or Marius did as long as it didn’t inter- fere with his plan, but interfering was what they did best. Jonathan had great plans for Maeve and her family, but he knew little of her connections to Julian’s family.

The Great War might have been over, but another one was looming in the distance, and it all began with a lonely mother named Maeve.

Writing

The fear of failure sits upon my chest,
The weight of it a crushing dread.
I look upon the page and see my words
And know they’re not enough, they’re dead.

I want to write, I want to share
My thoughts and feelings with the world,
But I’m afraid that no one will care
Or that they’ll laugh and call me hurled.

So I sit here, frozen in my fear,
Unable to write, unable to speak.
I’m trapped inside my own self-doubt
And I don’t know how to break free.

But then I think of all the great
Writers who have come before me.
They all faced the same fears, I know,
But they didn’t let them stop them.

So I take a deep breath and start to write,
And as I do, the fear begins to fade.
I know that I’m not perfect, but that’s okay.
I’m just going to write and let the words flow.

I may never be a famous author,
But that’s okay. I’m just going to write
For myself and for the few who care
To read what I have to say.

Indie Writing Advice (Indie Writer Series #3)

I have been writing on and off all of my life. Of course, when I was in school it was mostly for assignments, and things of that nature. But in my early 30s, I caught the writing bug and never looked back. I am what people call an indie writer because I am self-published. And I have learned so many things on this journey, which is not over. I have many ideas that I want to work on.

One of the biggest things I can tell other writers, especially those in the beginning of their writing career, is this.

  1. Do not compare yourself to anyone, and I mean anyone. People will tell you all sorts of things to make themselves look better than they are. They will tell you they wrote 10,000 words today, or they wrote 100,000 thousand words this month. They will tell you all of these things and more. Maybe they did write that much, and if they did, good for them, but do not try to measure yourself against this. I am lucky if I write 1,000 words a week!
  1. Do not compare your first draft to anything. It is a first draft, and you will rewrite and edit many times before getting it right.
  1. Take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt. What works for one might not work for someone else.
  1. Do not try to be everything. As indie writers, we have to be many things, writers, artists, editors, marketers, and so on. No one is expecting you to be great at all of these things. I for one suck at marketing, but I am learning. The more I work at it the better I get. But do not get down about yourself when you struggle with it. There are others out there that can help. I for one always hire and editor.

Overall, do this for yourself. There are many writers out there, but you are the only you. We want to hear your story. So don’t get discouraged, just be yourself.

Book Promo

I made this to promote my book The Shadow Realm Chronicles: Maeve. I might make more as this is a series, but I wanted to try this out first. Marketing is not my best skill, sadly.

Frustrated Indie Writer

Frustrated Indie Writer

I am what you call an indie writer which means I publish my own books. I tried to work with a publisher, but it did not go well. I learned a lot from working with them, and from writing over the years.

Now I am writing the last book in my series the Shadow Realm Chronicles and still I do not know how to market the book. It worries me sometimes that I have put all this energy into this project and because of that no one will read it. I recently got a review that was not the best and it made me think. Do I really know how to write? Are my books just crap? I know all writers have people who don’t like their books, and everyone has their own taste, but man that killed me.

I found that when I write, I am less stressed. So that act of writing keeps me grounded and focused. When I am not writing, for any reason, I am more stressed and irritable.

I also like being creative. My books series, I think is fun. It is the story about a family that is cursed and through generations they try and overcome this darkness.
